March 25th, 2025: three games, three wins, three moments that will go down in Allderdice WPIAL history. After an official jurisdiction earlier in the year removed Dice from the WPIAL, most spring teams’ seasons were turned into exhibition games. The only exception was that City League games were worked into the schedule to allow teams to be eligible for the state tournament.
At 2:00 pm, Allderdice Boys’ Volleyball took on the Keystone Oaks Golden Eagles, who compete in the WPIAL. The game took place during the school day in a packed Allderdice gymnasium. The Dragons swept Keystone Oaks, winning three sets in a row. In the first set, Dice started cold but were able to come back and win 26-24. In the second set, Dice dominated, with Juniors Roan Tuck and Matias Allen overwhelming the Golden Eagles to win the set 25-15. Dice finished off the match with impressive blocks and picture-perfect sets to complete the sweep 25-18. Tuck, who is the Junior Captain, said, “It was a little surprising and intimidating to have so many fans at the game, but it was nice to get some recognition for the guys on the team.”
At 4:00 pm, Allderdice vs. West Allegheny's first matchup of the day occurred on the diamond with Allderdice’s senior ace Zack Shook throwing his first of 100 total pitches. Shook had an incredible outing, striking out eight and only giving up three earned runs against the Trib’s number 4 team in 5A. Through the first three innings, Allderdice took a commanding 11-2 lead after a double by junior Lukas Stead completed a six-run inning. After a few errors, West Allegheny crept back into the game, scoring three runs in the sixth. However, the Dragons stopped the bleeding and eventually took home a big win with the final score 11-8. If the Dragons were still in the WPIAL, the win would’ve been their first section win since 2019. When asked about how it felt to have his first win in a section game, junior Niv Friedman said, “It was a great win and a lot of fun. A lot of guys have been waiting for this feeling for a long time, so it feels great!”
After Allderdice’s baseball triumph, the men’s lacrosse team took on West Allegheny across the river at Joe P. DeMichela Stadium. Dice went into this lacrosse game 0-2, looking to get their first win of the season. Junior Captain Sam Wahila opened the scoring with two goals in the first quarter, giving Allderdice a quick 2-0 lead. In a heated second quarter, the Dragons held West Allegheny to a scoreless first half despite being down a man for most of the second due to penalties. West Allegheny came out of halftime energized, scoring a quick pair of goals to tie the game 2-2 at the end of the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, Sam Wahila completed the hat trick, scoring his third goal of the game on an assist from junior Ethan Voight-Cherna. Wahilla said, “It felt good to help the team out. We needed this win badly, couldn’t have done it without the teammates.” Junior Elijah Plummer-Polson also tallied a goal to cap off a 4-2 win.
At this point, Dice’s history in the WPIAL has been poor, as they have competed in the most challenging classification of 6A. However, this year Dice has some of their best teams yet, and moving down to the 5A classification could make them a serious contender in all sports. The future is looking bright for the Dragon’s spring sports teams.
